2026-09-24 17:10:00

Model Overview

The e-JS1 is an all-electric micro-hatchback/panel van developed by JAC Motors for export markets. Positioned as an entry-level EV tailored for urban commutes, short-distance trips, and commercial last-mile delivery, it prioritises high value-for-money and practicality. Sold in China as the "Yiwei Huaxianzi", it is marketed overseas under two badges: the e-JS1 (passenger version) and the e-JS1 City Cargo (commercial panel van). The domestic JAC Yiwei Huaxianzi was updated with the Zhi'ai Edition in June 2024, tagged from RM59,900. Serving as JAC's eighth battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in Brazil, the e-JS1 carries an official retail price of 149,900 Brazilian Reais (approx. RM200,000). Other export destinations include Chile, Switzerland, and Thailand.

Dimensionally, the e-JS1 measures 3,650 mm long, 1,670 mm wide, and 1,540 mm tall, riding on a 2,390 mm wheelbase, giving it a nimble footprint. The passenger version offers a 5-seater configuration with 121 litres of boot space, while the City Cargo variant removes the rear seats to expand cargo volume to 1,200 litres with a payload capacity of 400 kg. Laden ground clearance stands at 160 mm, with a kerb weight of 1,180 kg.

Design Language

The e-JS1 showcases a youthful, trendy design ethos. As an all-electric microcar, it features a closed-off front grille flanked by rounded headlamp clusters, delivering a cute and cheerful visual appeal. An optional two-tone exterior with a floating roof effect enhances its stylish and bespoke charm. Its compact profile is defined by soft, flowing lines, while black plastic side-skirt cladding lowers the visual centre of gravity and shields against daily scuffs and scrapes. Round the back, the minimalist tailgate is complemented by distinctive LED tail lamps that ensure instant recognition when lit.

Inside, the cabin features a predominantly black theme, with customisation options such as white, pink, and green trims to suit varied customer tastes. The dashboard layout is clean and intuitive; higher-spec variants gain a floating centre infotainment touchscreen, whereas a fully digital instrument cluster is standard across the board. The cabin strikes a neat balance between everyday utility and tech appeal, further aided by cleverly positioned cabin storage cubbies.

Powertrain Performance

Powering the e-JS1 is a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor outputting 45 kW (approx. 62 PS) and 150 Nm of torque. Top speed is rated at 110 km/h for the passenger version and 105 km/h for the City Cargo. It completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 10.7 seconds, delivering smooth, linear power delivery well-suited for urban stop-and-go driving and short-haul deliveries.

Juicing the motor is a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack supplied by Gotion High-Tech, available in 30.2 kWh and 31.4 kWh capacities. PBEV-rated range is 161 km for the 30.2 kWh pack and 181 km for the 31.4 kWh variant. The e-JS1 City Cargo is rated for up to 302 km under more lenient test cycles, while the domestic 30.2 kWh Huaxianzi claims a CLTC range of 301 km. Power consumption averages around 10 kWh/100 km. For charging, it supports both DC fast charging and AC charging. The 30.2 kWh variant accepts 22 kW DC fast charging (20-100% in approx. 70 minutes), while the 31.4 kWh pack charges at 20 kW DC (approx. 75 minutes). For AC charging, the 30.2 kWh model supports 6.5 kW (20-100% in around 4 hours), while the 31.4 kWh version supports 3.3 kW (taking approx. 8 hours).

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the e-JS1 employs a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup—a tried-and-tested configuration in the micro-EV segment that balances low production costs with decent everyday ride comfort. Power is sent strictly to the front wheels (FWD). Without electric power steering (EPS), the steering retains a slightly heavier, grounded weighting suited for low-speed urban manoeuvring.

Stopping power comes courtesy of front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The car rides on 165/65 R14 tyres wrapped around steel or alloy wheels depending on the variant. Weighing in at 1,180 kg, the compact dimensions and tight turning radius grant it outstanding agility in tight city traffic and cramped parking lots. A laden ground clearance of 160 mm ensures easy clearance over daily urban road imperfections and speed humps.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the e-JS1 balances functional practicality with modern tech. All variants come standard with a fully digital meter cluster, while higher-spec trims feature a floating centre infotainment touchscreen supporting Bluetooth connectivity, media streaming, and a reverse camera display. Select export versions add smartphone integration and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot for extra convenience. Audio is delivered via a 4-speaker sound system, fulfilling basic in-car entertainment needs.

In terms of cabin amenities, the e-JS1 gets manual air conditioning, power windows all around, remote central locking, and a front 12V socket. Upholstery is available in fabric or synthetic leather, with manual seat adjustment for the driver. The steering wheel comes in urethane or leather wrap with tilt adjustment. The rear seat features a single-piece folding backrest to expand the passenger car's 121-litre boot, whereas the City Cargo model ditches the rear seats entirely to maximise cargo room. On the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) front, the e-JS1 remains pleasantly quiet at urban speeds, though tyre roar and wind noise become more apparent on highway runs.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety equipment includes active systems such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) as standard. Passive safety on upper-grade passenger variants includes dual front airbags (driver and front passenger). A reverse camera and rear parking sensors are fitted either as standard or optional equipment, facilitating easy low-speed parking manoeuvres. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is available in select export markets. Additionally, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) comes fitted to prevent rollback on slopes.

For driver assistance, cruise control is standard across the lineup for more relaxed highway cruising. The e-JS1 does not come equipped with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Keep Assist (LKA), keeping its ADAS capability at Level 1. As an entry-level micro EV, the e-JS1 has not been assessed by independent crash testing bodies such as C-NCAP or Euro NCAP, and its chassis structure is engineered to meet fundamental crash compliance requirements.

Market Performance and Reception

The e-JS1 is a crucial component of JAC Motors' global new energy strategy. To date, JAC has expanded its footprint across 132 countries and regions, with cumulative global exports exceeding 1,500,000 units and a global customer base surpassing 10 million. In Brazil, with an RRP of 149,900 Brazilian Reais, the e-JS1 is positioned as one of the most accessible EVs on the market, while also reigning as the smallest and most affordable electric commercial van available locally. Since its introduction, the e-JS1 has forged a strategic partnership with ride-hailing giant Uber in Brazil, where it has also enjoyed decent resale demand in the pre-owned EV segment.

Customer feedback in Latin American markets like Brazil and Chile has been largely positive, driven by its low cost of entry and ultra-low running costs (around 10 kWh/100 km, offering massive fuel savings over conventional petrol vehicles). However, as Brazil's EV growth pace cooled amidst intensifying competition, the e-JS1 saw steep price depreciation across new and used markets. The e-JS1 EXT variant, which originally retailed at around 174,900 Brazilian Reais, saw its second-hand value drop to around 80,000 to 85,000 Brazilian Reais after two years—a residual value dip of nearly 60%. This has triggered broad industry discussions across Brazil regarding EV depreciation and long-term resale values.

Overall, the e-JS1 (Huaxianzi) represents a crucial strategic play for JAC Motors in the micro BEV sector and serves as the vanguard for JAC's international electrification push. By offering both passenger and City Cargo versions, it neatly caters to both personal urban commuting and commercial fleet logistics, playing an instrumental role in driving EV adoption across developing global markets with its keen pricing and pocket-friendly operating costs.
